JUL 18 10    YOUR MUSICAL WEAPON OF CHOICE

posted by Genycis of SFB on July 18, 2010 3:25 PM | under Sounds

I had to think a minute before I put this one up as to which weapon of choice I personally had as well... I mean, I'm sure most of us as beatmakers, or producers, or composers of instrumental music have a weapon of choice... a "go to instrument" if you will.  While we all dabble in using all kinds of instrument sounds in our hip hop beats, r&b instrumentals, ambient soundscapes, or movie scores, there tends to be a "go to" that we all have.  Some people who constantly create R&B instrumentals may go more towards a piano sound as their instrument, while others may go towards strings.  Bottom line is, we all tend to have that musical weapon of choice.  So what's yours?

I know personally, I can probably say I'm a bit more partial to the lush sounds of a piano.  Piano instrument sounds usually tend to shape a ...

JUL 13 10    MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MADE OUT OF A VEGETABLE

posted by Genycis of SFB on July 13, 2010 9:56 AM | under General

Well, just when you think the creative have done all they can to show their creativity, there are still people out there that will take it to yet another level to show you that the creative mind is definitely something to be reckoned with.  Of course, since SoundsForBeats.com focuses a lot on a variety of musical instruments, and since I happened to stumble upon this video on YouTube, I thought I'd share it with you all.  So exactly what is the musical instrument that was created?  And with what vegetable did this person create an instrument with?

The thoughts of this creative mind decided to go a different route with a musical instrument.  As displayed on the YouTube video below, he decided to take a power drill, and a few other pieces that he must have needed.  He then proceeded to take the drill, and poke several holes into his vegetable ...

JUL 6 10    BEAMER, BENZ, OR BENTLEY SOUNDSFORBEATS.COM REMAKE

posted by Genycis of SFB on July 06, 2010 12:47 AM | under Sounds

Okay, so it's safe to say that the release of Lloyd Banks' Beamer, Benz, or Bentley has brought an impact to mainstream hip hop music.  People are loving the track itself, the vibe, and the fact that this beat brings knock into their speakers when they listen to it.  The track overall seems to get majority of people listening to it hyped up.  Would you agree?

With that said, I decided to take some of the sounds available at SoundsForBeats.com, and create a remake of the beat in FL Studio 9 from scratch using no samples at all.  I don't actually have a video of this instrumental as of yet, but will put up one soon in another blog, so be sure to check back often for the blog entry with the video of the remake.  This instrumental took a little while to remake, but I feel confident about the remake ...

JUN 27 10    REASON 5.0 TO BE RELEASED SOON

posted by Genycis of SFB on June 27, 2010 12:54 AM | under General

Okay, so amidst the debates and long battles with one another over which program is the most superior, which should be shut down, and which is easier to use when producing beats and instrumentals on, there seem to be more people that protect Propellerhead's Reason and give it more merit than other software programs.  Yet, when you take a look at various polls, it's clear to see that there are more people that support FL Studio and Cubase over Reason.  So will that change with the release of Reason 5.0 coming along soon?

One can only guess and assume if Reason 5.0's long awaited release will help boost the Stockholm, Sweden based company once it's finally out on the market.  I can honestly say that I am and always will be a FL Studio (Fruity Loops) user and fan.  I've tried Reason before from a friend, but playing around with it ...

JUN 25 10    SOUNDSFORBEATS.COM FOR AMBIENT INSTRUMENTALS

posted by Genycis of SFB on June 25, 2010 7:44 PM | under Producers

When some people think of FL Studio or it's older known name, Fruity Loops, the first thoughts that probably come to mind would be hip hop beats or electronica music that can be created within it.  In comparison and similarity, when people visit SoundsForBeats.com, the first thoughts to mind would probably be an array of premade loop kits for creating hip hop beats or instrumentals.  And while the case is that the name "SoundsForBeats.com" has the word Beats in it, the musical instrument soundfonts available at SoundsForBeats.com are used for much more than just hip hop beats.

Case in point, a music composer, an instrumental guru of sorts, the creator of Jms3Music.com, James Stafford, has really shown others as well as myself, that the sounds available at SoundsForBeats.com can be used in great lengths to create ambient music instrumentals and movie scores.  JMS3Music showcases a variety of different instrumentals that James ...

JUN 23 10    BLASTING BASS ISN'T ALWAYS THE BEST CASE

posted by Genycis of SFB on June 23, 2010 9:54 PM | under General

I had to address this because I know there are a lot of beat makers and producers who started off creating this mistake that I remember doing as well when I first started creating hip hop beats and rap instrumentals.

This is just a general tip, but I must say that it helps to create the overall mix sound better than anticipated.  The simple tip... don't EQ your bass on the deep end and don't overdo the bass mixing on your track.  There are so many hip hop beats, dirty south beats especially, that are composed or produced, that overdo the bass.  Okay, we all know that dirty south beats are supposed to knock hard, that's a given.  But, the more bass is added, especially on the lower end, the more cluttered the beat becomes clashing with the kick drums of the track.  No one wants to hear clipping as a ...

NOV 25 09    REVERB EQUATES TO AMBIENCE

posted by Genycis of SFB on November 25, 2009 8:01 PM | under FL Studio

Although one of the most misused effects in making beats and instrumentals, reverb can be without question, a great friend to a beat maker or producer as well!  There's something to be said about having a nice reverb flowing through your mix.  It brings out a nice ambience to your beats, and gives it a nice wider feel at the same time.  However, overdo it, and you may create a muddy mess of echoing on your mix which is not a great sound at all.  There is not much to be said about the reverb plugins in FL Studio, as some people doubt on their ability to bring out a nice sound.  So how do you go about doing that?

Bringing out reverb isn't too difficult, but can be a bit tricky depending on how you have your channels set up within FL Studio.  Best rule of thumb first of all, ...

NOV 25 09    TWITTER IS BENEFICIAL

posted by Genycis of SFB on November 25, 2009 12:28 AM | under General

Who says having a Twitter account isn't really a benefit?  Having a Twitter account measures greatly in a variety of different ways!  It all depends on how you use it, and the work you put into utilizing it to be a greater tool than you would've thought.  In the end, you could have the greatest tools, but if you're not using them right, it doesn't matter!  I tell people this all the time in terms of hip hop beats, and how some people wish they had an MPC or other type of beat machine because they feel that the computer doesn't generate anything great!  Tell that to the hundreds of kats online making hot beats on their PC!  So how does a Twitter account benefit?

There are a few ways that I can mention that a Twitter account is great to use!  First of all, creating a following is key!  Finding ...

SEP 23 09    FL STUDIO BEAT REMAKE

posted by Genycis of SFB on September 23, 2009 12:27 AM | under FL Studio

What's goin' on?

Just wanted to share a remake I had done awhile back in FL Studio for Ciara's "Like A Boy". I know some of you may have seen the video, and others may not have, so I thought that for those that haven't, or even for those that have and wanted to see it again, I'm sharing the video on my blog on SoundsForBeats.com. I'll be creating more FL Studio videos of working on beats that I'll share with you all on the blog, for those that are looking for different thoughts or tips on beat making.  Of course, sounds I create for SoundsForBeats.com, I actually use in my hip hop beats as well.  Some sites may sell sounds but don't believe in them firmly enough to not use them.  I stand behind my musical instrument sounds, and use them quite frequently on my beats.

And if you're new to ...

You can hear a brief created melody with this instrument on the media player below.  No effects were used on the instrumental.  This is all simply created with the Bonewood Acoustic:

SEP 17 09    PRODUCER LESHAN DAVID LEWIS - L.E.S.

posted by Genycis of SFB on September 17, 2009 12:42 PM | under Producers

I'm sure many of you remember the old school, hot bangin' Nas album "Illmatic"... then again, who really doesn't remember it?  This album had Nas spittin more flames than a blowtorch lit and aimed at a gas station nearby.  Of course, back in our day was certainly the home of rap lyrics, and more and more tracks contained lyrical fire.  But what about the production, or the hip hop beats themselves, how did they fair up?  How did rap instrumentals of back then hold weight, and do most of you remember the names of some of the old school producers of our generation?

Well, I'll toss up a freebie for you all to remember in terms of artistry work on some of the hottest hip hop albums dropped back in the day.  Let's face it, hip hop music is nothing in comparison of what it used to be.  And some of ...

SEP 16 09    NEED MORE BANG TO YOUR BEATS?

posted by Genycis of SFB on September 16, 2009 7:20 PM | under VST Plugins

Are you a producer or beat maker that's always looking for that extra bang when you make hip hop beats?  Do you always feel like there's just not enough thump when you make rap instrumentals?  I'm sure most of us in the beat making / production industry have felt the same, on some days a bit more, and on some days a bit less.  I mean, when can a beat not have enough thump in hip hop music and get away with it, right?

Well, lo and behold, the music software company DDMF has launched a new compressor VST plugin that can be used in any music production software or beat maker software that utilizes VST plugin effects, such as FL Studio, Orion Pro, Cubase, Sonar, and others.  Sorry Reason users, Reason still has not implemented external VST plugins.  This is also available for both PC and Mac.  This bad boy ...

SEP 11 09    THE LONG AWAITED FL STUDIO 9 RELEASE!!

posted by Genycis of SFB on September 11, 2009 12:20 PM | under FL Studio

It's Finally available!  FL Studio 9 (or Fruity Loops as some still call it) has officially been released as of September 9th, 2009.  For some, it's just another release for another software, and for others, the release of the music production software, FL Studio 9 is like celebrating Christmas early!

So what's all the hype about FL Studio 9's release?  Well, for those that have had the world known music production / beat maker software for years, it is another update with fixed bugs, and new features and plugins to have making beats easier to accomplish.  Or rather, for making music completely!

FL Studio has been tweaked with various new features, and plugins that add to making songs or making hip hop beats within FL Studio.  Some of these new features consist of a new stereo enhancer plugin, and a new vocoder plugin, Vocodex.  Also, the playlist has been revamped a bit ...

SEP 7 09    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTALS AND THE SOUNDS INVOLVED!

posted by Genycis of SFB on September 07, 2009 10:18 AM | under General

What's goin' on?  Wanted to send shoutouts to all of you out there that are beat makers and music producers in the music industry doin' your thing!  Much respect to you all.  After all, without people like us making hot beats for rappers, singers, or other artists, the tracks wouldn't be as great.  Don't get me wrong, acapellas are great too, but the life of a song in music is brought out more with a great instrumental behind it.

Whether you add great hip hop beats to hip hop music, a hot r&b instrumental to r&b music, some bangin rap beats to a rap music album, overpowering guitar music to a rock song, or some eerie cinematic movie scores to a horror movie scene, the life of a song, or movie scene, or even video games, are all brought out with the instrumental.  Think about it, and imagine the next ...
